New Comp Coach FAQ

We get a lot of questions about coaching a Comp team. Most of them come from coaches that have been coaching a Recreation team and are ready to make the move to Comp for a little more competition.

Here are the basics so you know the main differences and what to expect…

  • The biggest difference right up front is that you will need to acquire a coaching license. This requires attending and passing two (2) in-person classes. You can find a list of current classes being offered as well as all of the instructions you need to get your license under the Coaching Education page of the UYSA website.

  • You will also need to take two (2) online training courses, the Heads Up concussion course, and the SafeSport course. If you are coming from the Rec program, these are the same courses you were required to take to coach there. Both of these courses have to be taken every year by every Admin on the roster.

  • You will need to come to Tryouts to draft your team! If you are bringing some players with you, they can be on your team and you will just fill your open roster spots at Tryouts. Typically, all of the coaches will help run the Tryouts for their age group and then work together to draft their players. Tryouts for this next year, Fall 2025/Spring 2026, will be May 20th, 22nd, 27th or 28th, depending on your age group. Check out the Tryouts page for more details!
